The San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District provides paramedic services to Contra Costa County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Zone 4. The delivery of high quality, effective patient care is facilitated by an EMS Coordinator and an EMS Specialist who report to the Battalion Chief of Special Operations. The District operates five fully equipped Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances daily and maintains an additional two ambulances in reserve. District ALS ambulances are equipped with state of the art medical equipment, including the AutoPulse resuscitation system. All engines and trucks are also staffed with at least one paramedic. District also maintains a Multi Casualty Incident (MCI) vehicle and supply trailer for large scale emergency medical incidents.

The District's EMS Division is an active participant in Contra Costa County's Fire-EMS Training Consortium - an organization committed to the values of quality, teamwork and innovation. The Consortium was established to standardize training for fire first responders and ambulance personnel countywide. The District is also recognized by the California EMS Authority as a Continuing Education Provider for Firefighter/Paramedics and Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technicians.

The District is a participant in Contra Costa County's automated EMS patient care record (PCR) system. The software is programmed to capture patient data upon receipt of a 9-1-1 call and provides enhanced capabilities for monitoring and evaluating patient care. The District is committed to the protection of an individual's private patient healthcare information and maintains a comprehensive Privacy Practices Policy.

The delivery of exceptional EMS in a partially rural area often involves the utilization of ALS helicopter service providers. The District routinely works with these providers in order to rapidly transport critical patients from remote locations or to avoid delays in transport. Some areas such as Mount Diablo State Park are so large and remote that an ALS helicopter is part of the initial EMS dispatch. Extensive in-service training is conducted with helicopter service providers to ensure the safety of patients, District personnel and helicopter crews.

The District provides leadership and support for the San Ramon Valley Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) Community Partnership Committee and created the Public Access Defibrillation Program. The PAD Committee has been active in both promoting public access to Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in locations throughout the District as well as encouraging layperson CPR training in the community.

The District is an American Heart Association recognized training center. Programs administered by the EMS Division include AHA Heartsaver CPR to the public as well as CPR and CPR Instructor training to fire and medical personnel.
