Home MenuCommunity Risk Reduction
The Community Risk Reduction Division is tasked with providing the highest level of fire prevention through public education, inspection and code enforcement and detailed plan review. Under the Direction of the Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal, the Community Risk Reduction Division strives to provide members of the District with the most updated information available to safely protect their home or place of business from fire and hazards. Fire Prevention has proven to be the most effective way to reduce loss of life and property.
Education
Undoubtedly the most important aspect of Fire Prevention, the Division provides numerous programs intended to promote and teach fire safety to all ages. All school children in the District receive Fire Prevention education from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Other programs include, New Parent Training, Personal Emergency Preparedness, and Fire Extinguisher Training. The Division also provides intervention for children and families on how to handle juvenile fire setting behaviors.
Engineering
One Plans Examiner and three Fire Inspectors conduct plan reviews of proposed construction projects, building remodels and development projects in the District. Field inspections are conducted to ensure that buildings meet the latest local and state Building and Fire Codes, including the review of fire and life safety systems and their intended use and installation ensuring the safety of all those in the District.
Enforcement
Three Fire Inspectors are responsible for inspecting existing businesses and properties for Fire Code violations and educating building owners and occupants on Fire Prevention practices. Inspectors also conduct safety inspections of outdoor events such as fairs, carnivals and fireworks displays.
Exterior Hazard Abatement
The Division inspects both public and private properties for unabated hazardous and/or combustible fuels which would allow a fire to travel from property to property or to structures. These inspections ensure that property owners maintain a defensible space around their homes that would allow firefighters to effectively stop fires from spreading from open space areas to structures and neighboring properties.
